German Convention Bureau to Celebrate Reunification at IMEX America

This autumn marks the 25th anniversary of the start of the “Peaceful Revolution” and the fall of the wall between East and West Germany, which ultimately led to the reunification of the country.

According to ICCA rankings, Germany is the number one meetings destination in Europe and second worldwide, after the U.S.  To recognize this accomplishment, the German Convention Bureau (GCB) will host a press conference during IMEX America 2014, October 14-16 in Las Vegas, to discuss how the German meetings industry has evolved and grown over the last 25 years.

The GCB will represent more than 200 members at booth #2219

New York-based Laura d’Elsa, Regional Director USA & Canada of the German Convention Bureau, will lead the celebrations in Vegas acknowledging the contribution that meetings in Germany have made to the success of Europe's largest economy.

“The fall of the wall and subsequent reunification of Germany has had a lasting impact on the country’s economy as a whole and the meetings industry in particular,” d'Elsa noted. “More business travellers come to Germany for conferences and meetings than anywhere else in Europe; this is a testament to the country’s commitment to value, innovative spirit, focus on sustainability and deep expertise in such industries as pharmaceutical, automotive, biotech and logistics that meeting planners desire in their meeting locations.”

Echoing d'Elsa's comments, the GCB has invested strongly in identifying its local expertise in priority economic sectors, and recently published a map of where meeting planners can best locate their meetings aligned to where such expertise resides under the title “Germany Expertise.”

The GCB has also made strenuous efforts to ensure that its sustainable meetings credentials are front and center of Germany's offer, recently receiving European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) certification. In 2012 and 2013, the GCB received funding from the German Federal Environmental Foundation and will continue the seminars from 2014.
