Best half-yearly performance since its opening

Darmstadt’s science and congress centre entered the second half of 2012 with revenue growth of 30%. This represents a sales volume of EUR 2.3 million, up almost EUR 500,000 on the same period of the previous year and a hefty 13.5%, or EUR 250,000, above the six-month forecast for 2012. The congress centre delivered peak performance in the months February March, April and June, while simultaneously achieving a further reduction in overall costs. This makes the first half of the year the most successful so far in the darmstadtium’s corporate history, delivering an operating result close to break-even.

93,700 attendees have already been welcomed to the darmstadtium on 179 event days (excluding setup and dismantling days and double counting). Altogether 146 events took place there in the period January to June 2012. This too marks an increase in both attendance and the number of events in comparison to the year-earlier period.

Reason enough to take an upbeat view of the future. Even so, Managing Director Lars Wöhler is adopting a cautiously optimistic stance: “We are naturally proud of having notched up such an outstanding first six months. At the moment, however, the outlook is clouding over a little due mainly to the general business situation, meaning that in terms of the second half-year we’ll probably not quite be able to match last year’s booking level. Nonetheless, as matters stand at present we’re aiming further to improve our result in comparison to 2011, when the darmstadtium managed to generate the highest revenues on the lowest consumption levels. This trend is what we want to continue stabilising. Going forward, we continue to aim for expansion and efficiency gains, and in the medium term we hope to exceed total sales of EUR 4m and further improve our operating result.”
