It’s summer, but just because you’re far from your desk on vacation or just looking to get outside doesn’t mean you have to lose track of the latest meetings and events industry news. Here are this afternoon’s four key headlines to help you stay on top of the industry.

U.S.: Washington, DC, Sets Visitation Record

Good news from the United States: Destination DC (DDC) has announced a record 21.3 million visitors to Washington, DC, for 2015, a 5 percent increase over the previous year. The results were shared at the organization’s annual Marketing Outlook Meeting, led by DDC President and CEO Elliott L. Ferguson

DDC also shared a sneak peek at the city’s convention scene in the year ahead. In 2017, Washington, DC, is scheduled to play host to 21 citywide conventions and events, which are defined as meetings that bring 2,500 room nights or more on peak to the city. The total economic impact for these meetings is $357 million with 484,649 total room nights. Highlights include the American College of Cardiology with 45,565 total room nights (March 17-19); Microsoft with 62,385 total room nights (July 10-13); and Society for Neuroscience with 54,100 total room nights (Nov. 12-15).

2017 will also see Washington, DC, host the U.S. Travel Association's IPW 2017 for the first time, from June 3-7, 2017. With Lockport Analytics forecasting an additional one million international visitors and $1.7 billion in economic impact, with $84 million in local taxes in the three years following IPW, that means more good news for the city ahead.

Europe: London Hotel Prices Down 16 Percent

Across the pond, planners looking to book have a new reason to turn to London: Trivago's Hotel Price Index reports a drop of 16 percent in the city’s hotel prices for the month of July, Buying Business Travel reports.

According to the index, average room rates in London fell to £143 in July from £171 in June, and were also down from £169 in July 2015. Elsewhere in the UK, hotel prices in Manchester dropped 17 percent, Brighton was down 15 percent and Leeds was down 14 percent.

Asia: Malaysia Airlines Turnaround Plan

In air travel news, embattled Malaysia Airlines is plotting “aviation’s greatest turnaround,” Channel NewsAsia reports.

The strong words come from new Malaysia Airlines CEO Peter Bellew, who took over the company’s reigns two months ago and has promised that the airline will return to the stock market in 2019. That will be a tall order, as the airline has posted losses of over US$1 billion since 2011, particularly after two disasters in 2014 — the disappearance of flight MH370 and the downing of MH17 over Ukraine — tarnished the brand’s image.

To get the airline back on track, Bellew told Channel NewsAsia that he would focus on getting ticket prices right, promoting more aggressively and cutting costs, which could include moving some flights to KL International Airport 2

Bonus Round: Newly Renovated Group Venue in Las Vegas

On a lighter note, The Palm Las Vegas is now accepting group dining renovations for early September following a big renovation.

The restaurant’s private dining room/meeting space is suitable for up to 80 guests, who can dine on Italian dishes and steakhouse favorites. Planners should note that the restaurant does not charge any rental fees or minimums, and that custom food and drink menus are available. The Palm team can also provide A\V equipment for events that need it.
