Sold-Out LAMITE Wraps in Cartagena

lamite 2016

The second annual Latin America Meeting & Incentive Travel Exchange (LAMITE) closed on Thursday with a sold out event.

The event, which pairs Latin America-based MICE buyers in one-to-one meetings with global travel suppliers, in the privacy of deluxe hotel rooms for individual, 15-minute meetings, took place June 21-24 at InterContinental Cartagena in Cartagena, Colombia

Buyers came in a day early on June 20 for a pre-event site visit at the Radisson Cartagena Ocean Pavillion Hotel, as well as some in Bogota at the JW Marriott and Marriott Bogota. The event opened unofficially with a casual reception sponsored by official Event Partner InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), complete with authentic Colombian music, exotic dancing, and vibrant costumes.

The official opening reception, sponsored by ProColombia and the Cartagena de Indias Convention Bureau, took place Tuesday evening at Casa 1537 in Cartagena’s Old Town, famous for its 16th century architecture, gorgeous monasteries, palaces and mansions with their overhanging balconies and shady patios.

The event began Wednesday morning with a presentation by Cherryl Brazier, director of global sales for Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, and then continued throughout the day with pre-scheduled, one-to-one appointments between buyers and suppliers, followed by a dinner at the Hilton Cartagena where guests were treated to an outdoor dining experience paired with Colombian versus Chile in the Copa America soccer (football) game.

Thursday’s event kicked off with an education session presented by Eduardo Chaillo, president and CEO of Global Meetings and Tourism Specialists LLC, and global general manager for Latin America at Maritz Global Events. Chaillo presented “Meetings Outlook: A Deep Dive into the Latest Business Trends,” on behalf of Meeting Professionals International (MPI). The session dove into the industry's latest business trends and how these trends will affect meeting planners and the future of their meetings.

Both buyers and suppliers alike were overwhelmed by the total value LAMITE provided them via the combination of education, activities, and one-to-one meetings.

Prominent MICE buyer Leandro Popik, CEO and co-founder of ESA Latin America, said “LAMITE is a great event. The fact that it’s in Latin America and speaks to the Latin American MICE market, and at the same time is organized by people with a global vision of our industry makes it the perfect show for us.”

Alicia Todaro, senior sales manager for Destination Puerto Rico, said “the event was very well-organized and a valuable opportunity for South America to learn about the destination of Puerto Rico.”

Dinah Policarpo, account executive, Dubai Tourism, felt there was a very high level of participants at LAMITE. Policarpo said, “The 15 minute appointments gave me a chance to make contact with potential buyers to see Dubai, while the receptions and activities gave me additional time to finish those conversations.”

The event was capped off with three terrific excursion options offered via partner Contactos DMC for all attendees, including the Colombian Emerald Factory Tour, an Old City walking tour and coffee presentation, and an afternoon bay cruise on a catamaran. Plus, to officially close the festivities, Hotel Las Americas hosted a rooftop reception and dinner where attendees danced the night away before saying their goodbyes.

“Great staff with unique VIP treatments and very qualified buyers,” said Aurora Sagredo, sales manager, Sheraton Santo Domingo. She emphasized there was “quality buyers and a great staff.”

LAMITE is an offshoot of Incentive Travel Exchange, the flagship event in the Questex Travel Group’s MICE portfolio of events and media, and is the only event in the industry that brings global suppliers to meet with Latin American buyers in Latin America.  For more information, visit LatinTravelExchange.com.
