Seventh Annual CMITE Wraps in Barbados

The seventh annual Caribbean Meeting and Incentive Travel Exchange, organized in partnership with Barbados Tourism Marketing, Inc., and Sunlinc, closed last week with over 1,600 one-to-one appointments made.

The event, which pairs North America-based MICE buyers to meet one-to-one with Caribbean travel suppliers in private hotel rooms for individual, 15-minute meetings, took place August 29 – September 1 at the Hilton Barbados Resort in Bridgetown, Barbados

Buyers came in a day early for pre-event fams at either the Colony Club or Sandals. They were also given the opportunity for post-event fams at the Fairmont Royal Pavilion

The official opening reception, sponsored by the Hilton Barbados Resort, took place on site at the colonial era Charles Fort, which was erected at Needham’s Point in 1650 by the British military to protect Carlisle Bay. The evening was complete with native Barbadian music, dancing, and cuisine.

Tuesday kicked off with private one-to-one appointments between buyers and suppliers, and broke midday for a networking lunch and presentation by the Dominican Republic Tourism Board. That evening guests traveled to Holder’s Hill for a match, where players were decked out in CMITE colored uniforms complete with event logo.

The game was put on by the Barbados Polo Club at Holders, and dining was provided by The Cliff Beach Club, Daphnes, CinCin, Primo, and Tapas restaurants. There were also rum cocktails by Mount Gay Rum and champagne. Caribbean music jolted spectators on to the grass after the match ended to close the night with dancing and a conga line.

One-to-one appointments continued again on Wednesday with a break midday for an MPI education session presented by Jessie States, manager of professional development, Meeting Professionals International. States presented “Meetings Outlook: A Deep Dive into the Latest Business Trends,” which dove into the industry's latest business trends and how these trends will affect meeting planners and the future of their meetings.

In addition, Questex meetings group director Kirk Lewis announced that CMITE 2017 will be taking place at the Hyatt Zilara | Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The Jamaica Tourist Board then did a short presentation to highlight some of the attractions to the audience.

Then the event was capped off by a flotilla party on the Caribbean Sea. Seven catamarans sailed out and surrounded a single boat where a live band played music while attendees dined on cuisine provided by Elegant Hotels, Crane, Sandals, Wyndham Sam Lord’s Castle, Accra, Fairmont and Ocean Hotels.

“Partnering with Questex to host CMITE as the first MICE event in Barbados was a key component in our strategy,” said Petra Roach, director of the U.S. for the Barbados Tourism Marketing, Inc. “We knew Questex was known to have the highest quality of buyers at their events, and this year’s CMITE was no exception. We couldn’t be more pleased with the event results so far, and look forward to the long-term benefits for Barbados tourism going forward.”

CMITE is an offshoot of Incentive Travel Exchange, the flagship event in the Questex Travel Group’s MICE portfolio of events and media, and is the only event in the industry that brings North America-based meeting planners and incentive buyers to meet with Caribbean travel suppliers.
