Luxembourg Summit to share industry best practice

The first European Event Summit will take place in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg at the beginning of September. Pete Roythorne finds out why people should be attending the event and what’s going to make it unique…

Under the strapline of “Share experiences and best practices of adding value to events and measuring it”, the first European Event Summit will take place in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg from 1-3 September 2011. It will be attended by Françoise Hetto-Gaasch, minister of small and medium-sized businesses and tourism, and Jeannot Krecké, minister of economy and trade, and will feature a range of globally renowned meetings industry speakers, including, Elling Hamso, Ruud Janssen and Roger Simons. Plus multisensory communication expert Karsten Klepper.

Supported by ISES (International Special Events Society), the seminar programme will cover the most pressing issues facing the industry – from adding value to your event and measuring return on investment (ROI), to hybrid events and sustainability.

“We are inviting the decision makers in the meetings and events industry to come to Luxembourg this September,” says the event's creator Netty Thines. “We want them to share their experiences with each other here in Luxembourg and then later to communicate these important ideas with the leaders and opinion makers in their respective countries.”

Thines came up with the idea for the event during the 20th Anniversary of Mediation after meeting Elling Hamso of the European Event ROI Institute.

“After having talked to Elling, I wondered what tools and techniques our colleagues in other countries use to measure the ROI of events, how they add value to events and also how they communicate that added value,” says Thines. “I couldn’t find much information, which is why I suggested that ISES meet in Luxembourg to help the industry share experiences and to network.”

The focus for the summit is very much on that concept – “sharing experiences and networking”. And Thines says her target audience is industry specialists, both agencies and suppliers.

“We’re open to everyone working with meetings and events,” she explains. “If you’re a European event marketing association, an event communication specialists, an event research institute or a member of the European meetings and events industry press, this event is for you.”

Standing out from the crowd

But with so many events currently taking place for the meetings and events industry, do we really need another one?

“Indeed, there are too many events and hopefully the outcome of the networking will be to find synergies between the different associations,” says Thines. “This is one reason we have invited all associations to attend.”

Thines: Time to stop talking and start communicating

Thines believes the unique selling point of the summit will be the networking between specialists and the exchange of experiences.

“We all are speaking so much about the added value of events, about measuring it, green events and sustainable communication, that I almost can’t hear it anymore,” she says. “But what are we doing really? What are the best tools? How can we communicate that to the companies? Hopefully this conference will help us really address some of these issues.”

The programme will feature a kick-off event at the restaurant on the top floor of the Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal with a formal welcome by the mayor of Luxembourg City. The conference itself will then take place on Friday 2 September at the Cercle Cité (Auditorium Citè).

“On the Saturday we will also be giving delegates the opportunity to discover Luxembourg, a green destination in the heart of Europe, with a treasure hunt and tours of the Mullerthal and the Moselle, as well as a dinner at the castle of Schengen,” explains Thines.
