Live campaign tours UK to recruit volunteer workers




Platform2, the global volunteering experience funded by the Department for International Development and run by Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and BUNAC, is about to launch a nationwide experiential marketing campaign to help it sign-up volunteers for future programmes.

It will consist of a four-date UK tour aimed at encouraging 18 to 25-year-olds interested in volunteering to work with community projects in a developing country. On returning from the trip, volunteers are asked to share their experiences with other young people who are considering becoming involved in Platform2 through art, photography, song, poetry, blogs, journalism, sculpture or film.

The campaign will be preceded by street team activity, promoting both the charity and the UK tour events.

The tour will kick off on 13 January 2009 at the Dogstar in Brixton, London, and continue at venues in Aberdeen (The Tunnels, 22 January), Liverpool (Bumper, 29 January) and Birmingham (Rainbow, 5 February), informing people of past and upcoming trips and help them sign-up as volunteers. Returning volunteers and promotional staff will be on hand at each venue to offer advice and share their experiences.

There will also be areas showcasing videos, pictures and artefacts from trips, as well as key messages and information about the countries and the community projects in the relevant regions.   

Ramping up the entertainment factor, Bands and DJs will be playing at each venue, including Let's Tea Party in Liverpool and The Royal Priesthood in London.

"Platform2 is a three-year programme that will see more than 2,500 18 to 25-year-olds volunteer for 10 weeks in a number of developing countries,” explained the organisation’s head of programme Mark Vyner. “We are giving people who would not normally have the opportunity to volunteer abroad the chance to learn new skills and make a valuable contribution to their community.

"We have completed a number of successful trips to date and we now want to build on that success by spreading the word about the difference this opportunity has made to people in this country and around the world."

Commenting on the live activity, Nick Wright, partner at experiential marketing agency Amplify, which is running the Platform2 campaign, said: "By connecting returning volunteers with other young people of similar backgrounds and life experiences, we will be creating an engaging environment, establishing an 'if they can do it, so can I’ attitude among the target audience to encourage new people to volunteer.

"Also, by using local volunteers and staff for each event, we can ensure the correct tone of voice for that area is maintained, as lifestyle, culture and aspirations will vary from city to city,"  he continued.

The street teams will carry out pre-event activity five days prior to each event at local colleges, youth groups, community projects, skate parks and shopping areas. They will inform people about the projects, invite them to the upcoming event, as well as answer any questions and help them fill out an application form should they want to sign up there and then.

The projects organised by Platform2 include constructing community buildings, teaching and caring for children, developing new and existing sport pitches, as well as assisting in HIV clinics in countries including Ghana, South Africa, India and Peru.
