New green directory site launched for BS8901 suppliers

Following a soft launch at the end of 2008, the BS8901 Register – www.bs8901register.co.uk – is now live. The site offers an opportunity for sustainable suppliers to advertise their products or services to organisations that may be considering BS8901 or ISO 14001 compliance, and are searching for partners that are sympathetic to their sustainable approach.
The site is currently free to sign up to. Users can search by location or keywords, and as the site develops will be able to search by supplier type and postcode. Other features in development include a members’ newsletter, which will keep all users of the register up to date with sustainable initiatives taking place in the UK events industry.
This new resource is being sponsored by two suppliers, which are committed to sustainability – Aztec Event Services and Seventeen Events. Andrew Williams, managing director of Seventeen, explains that the site is not intended as another rating system or stamp of approval – rather it should draw the various different  accreditation shemes togather under one umbrella.
“We were very conscious that there are a lot of directory sites out there, and lots of different benchmarks for sustainability,” said Williams. “We’re trying to add clarity to that rather than create another level of confusion.

“Whether you are going down the route of BS8901, ISO14001, local sustainable benchmarks such as the popular ‘Go Green’ scheme in South London, or just have a product or service that could help other organisations make their events more sustainable, www.bs8901register.co.uk is for you.

“This isn’t an auditing process that is going to take up more time or money,” Williams continued. “It’s an open forum that is moderated by its users and members. We hope that any organization planning to make its programme of events more sustainable will find a wealth of perfect suppliers on the register.”
The site also has useful information on BS8901 itself, and features a FAQ section to answer common queries. The award-winning London design agency Dunk Digital produced the site, which is also the team behind Seventeen’s sustainable event management system, eventberry, which launched in October 2008.
