London venues lead the way by gaining sustainable certification

Earls Court and Olympia have become the first venues to be certified compliant to the sustainable events standard BS 8901.

For the past two years EC&O Venues’ dedicated sustainability advisor, Emma Wellman, has worked as part of the BS 8901 panel with the British Standards Institution (BSI) to help develop the ground-breaking, sustainable event management system.

“We’re delighted that EC&O Venues has been one of the first businesses to be certified to BS 8901, the standard for a sustainable event management system,” said Rob Wallis, managing director of BSI Management Systems in the UK.

“EC&O Venues has placed high emphasis on the social, economic and environmental impacts its events have and the standard provides a framework of good practice. It is certainly setting an example to the rest of the industry by ensuring a balanced approach to economic activity, environmental responsibility and social progress – something all event organisers should strive to achieve.”

Commenting on the achievement, Wellman said: “As a member of the BS 8901 committee, we’ve been involved in the development of the standard from its inception. We are delighted to be the first venues to be certified to the standard and believe it effectively brings together all of our extensive corporate social responsibility projects into one management
