Industry association signs up to global sustainability index

Eventia is the first events association to launch The Green Globe Index (GGI) to its members. The Index is a global solution to sustainability indexing and disclosure in the travel and tourism industry.

Green Globe has been providing certification and benchmarking to businesses for more than two decades and operates in 50 countries. The Carbon Consultancy, with which Eventia has a long-standing partnership, supports the GGI with technical and sustainability expertise.

The GGI is based upon company submissions, using an online questionnaire and data entry process to deliver a ranking and peer-group comparison by business type both nationally and globally. Users that achieve a minimum level of attainment are placed on a public index for consumer and corporate buyers to identify sustainable suppliers.

“This is a great opportunity for Eventia members to benchmark their corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity against their peers and identify areas for future improvement,” said Aileen Reuter, Eventia board member for corporate social responsibility and marketing director at Grass Roots. “A number of members from the CSR working party acted as a focus group for the index, and I am delighted Eventia is the first events association to partner with this globally recognised sustainability index.”

Suitable for all member types, from venues to event agencies, the GGI provides a common platform to measure, index and demonstrate sustainability. It is designed to support and drive a more sustainable industry by providing a simple and low-cost process for all users, irrespective of their size and current levels of engagement. Participants can update their data throughout the year, improving their rating and enabling them to benchmark progress.

“The index enables engagement with sustainability by all industry stakeholders, whether beginners or advanced practitioners of sustainable event management/delivery,” explained Hugo Kimber, chief executive of the Carbon Consultancy. “It is designed to support increased performance, help companies to achieve increased sustainability, while decreasing costs from waste, and help demonstrate tangible activity to clients and employees alike.”

Eventia has negotiated a reduced rate of $75 (from $85) for all members joining the index before 30 September 2009, and $60 for additional licences (up to seven) to be used for other office or hotel locations.
