Hotel and venue group signs up to green IT initiative

Dolce Hotels and Resorts has signed up to the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, a scheme launched by Google and Intel in 2007, which looks to reduce global carbon emissions from the operation of computers by 54 million tons a year by 2010.

This proactive measure, which will reduce Dolce’s carbon footprint by establishing more energy efficient computing standards within the group, will further support Dolce’s ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility in the local and global community.

Aimed at Dolce’s internal operations, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative will help cast awareness on the issue of minimising energy consumption, thereby reducing carbon emissions by improving the efficiency of power delivery to the company’s computing infrastructure.

One of the most immediate ways the Climate Savers Computing Initiative at Dolce will increase energy efficiency is by reducing energy usage when computers are in an inactive state by ensuring all computers are turned off after a certain hour.

Other immediate measures that Dolce will implement as part of its sustainability efforts include a procurement policy that will see only ENERGY STAR-qualified computers, printers and servers purchased, the configuration of all computers at Dolce corporate offices and individual properties to ‘sleep’ when not used for 20 minutes and the implementation of sensors and timers to automatically turn lights on and off when necessary.

“Through implementing the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, we reinforce our commitment to CSR and take a major stride in becoming the most green meetings hospitality company in the industry,” said Gerald Lampaert, Dolce’s vice president of Global Information Technology.

Climate Savers Computing Initiative has more than 350 member companies and organisations that have committed to reduce computer power consumption. By improving the computer’s power delivery and reducing energy consumed, the initiative aims to meet pre-set, specified efficiency targets and get corporate participants to commit to purchasing power-efficient computing products.

In addition to the new Climate Savers Computing membership, Dolce Hotels and Resorts implements other environmentally conscious initiatives aimed at guests, such as the Meet Green programme, allowing meeting planners to determine the environmental impact of their meetings by using Dolce’s Plan it Green step-by-step guide to green meetings.
