Eventia CEO to stand down

Izania Downie today announced her decision to leave her position as chief executive of meetings and events industry association Eventia. She will, however, continue her involvement as an ambassador.

Downie moved to a part-time role over 12 months ago to take up consultancy and other related activities. This decision is a step change on from that, allowing her to consider a wider range of future opportunities.
“It has been a great five years with Eventia, serving on the board and as CEO, and I’m delighted to be joining the Ambassador Programme, continuing my involvement with the association, albeit on a voluntary basis,” said Downie.

We've gone through a lot of change over the past four years, with our mergers and growth, and it has been a challenging and rewarding experience,” she continued.

“There is now an excellent management team, headed up by Tracy Johnson in Birmingham, and a strong board in place to drive the direction of the association forward. So I feel confident that I'm leaving the association with a solid foundation from which to continue their good work and growth.

“There is widespread support for the future development of the association, as recently demonstrated by the creation of the Strategic Advisory council and now the Ambassador Programme, which will see leading industry figures inputting into the direction of the association and providing support to the board. Furthermore, membership is strong and we are finding more companies are wanting to be a part of the association.”
Eventia chairman Mark Saxby commended Downie for doing an “outstanding job”.

“She has undoubtedly become an industry icon in the process,” he said. “She has shown tremendous commitment, passion and enthusiasm and given a great deal of time and effort in shaping the organisation. She has overseen significant changes and achieved a great deal during her time in office. Not least, she has created a tremendous legacy by way of the management team who are well versed in the day-to-day management requirements of the association.

“We have a very committed board, an Exec Team comprising myself and two former Chairmen in Rob Allen and Mark Taylor, and now we also have the Ambassadors,” Saxby continued.

“We are already discussing working with Izania on specific projects on a consultancy basis, although this will depend on which opportunities she decides to take up. Either way, we are very fortunate in that we will be benefitting from her input as an ambassador, which is something from a personal perspective that I will very much value.”
