Cut in public sector spending replaces recession as major challenge to industry

Some 65% of respondents to the Meetings Industry Association’s latest Pathfinder Report said the severe measures taken in the public sector to reduce the UK’s dept by the British Government is the biggest issue facing the country’s meetings and events industry.

The cuts in public sector spending appear to have taken over from the recession as the main challenge facing organisers and planners, with the effects of the resulting reduction in meetings and events already being felt.

The report does, however, sound a positive note with 60% of respondents claiming their business had either remained static in terms of growth, or increased.

“This report reconfirms what a crucial time this is for the industry,” said MIA chief executive Jane Evans. “Recovery is fragile and must be protected by all within it by being flexible and responsive to clients’ needs. We should be working together to attract big events to our destinations and adapting to ensure clients can achieve objectives from their meetings and events; it’s a tough time for our clients too and our solutions need to reflect this.”

The MIA Pathfinder report is based on a survey was conducted during July 2010 among individuals representing destinations, venues and buyers from all industry sectors in the UK.
