Four Big New and Newly Renovated Event Venues in Washington, DC

Washington, DC, has welcomed a slate of new hotel openings this summer, and more properties are on the horizon. With new hotels come new event venues — here’s a quick look at new places to check out.

the watergate hotel

The Watergate Hotel

The historic, 336-room Watergate Hotel, which reopened in mid-June following a $125 million renovation project, has 27,000 square feet of meeting and function space with 11 flexible indoor and outdoor spaces.

The renovation added the 7,000 square foot Moretti Grand Ballroom, which incorporates LED light panels and a statement wall made of Gucci marble, as well as an additional 10,000 square feet of outdoor space overlooking the Potomac

For dining, the hotel’s signature restaurant, Kingbird, combines a contemporary dining room / bar with a dining room offering a prix fixe dinner. Cuisine is American with a French twist. Outdoor riverfront seating is also available. For drinks, the lobby has The Next Whisky Bar, offering an extensive list of whisky, bourbon and rye, and on the roof is Top of the Gate, where guests can enjoy bottle service, cocktails and Asian street food with views of the Potomac, Capitol and Washington Monument

The Watergate Hotel is located at 2650 Virginia Ave NW in Washington, D.C. A capacity chart is available at www.thewatergatehotel.com/capacity-chart.

Grand Hyatt Washington

In renovation news, the 897-room Grand Hyatt Washington renovated its meeting space in October of last year as part of a property-wide revamp by Atlanta-based design firm tvsdesign and Bethesda-based Coakley & Williams Construction, Inc.

The renovation added eight new meeting rooms, 6,240 square feet of meeting space and 3,175 square feet of prefunction space to the hotel’s lower level, now renamed the Declaration Level instead of the Lagoon Level. The hotel now was 42,000 square feet of meeting space with a capacity of up to 1,700 guests, including a 17,000 square foot ballroom. The space can also break out into 32 separate rooms for smaller meetings.

Off the hotel’s living room and signature restaurant, Casolare, 1,000 square foot Tunlaw Terrace offers space for open-air events with space for up to 150 guests.

Casolare will provide catering for all events and meetings at the hotel, with completely customized menu options available. That restaurant, which is led by Chef Michael Schlow, is set to open in July and will serve coastal Italian fare emphasizing the Amalfi Coast, Sardinia, Puglia, Cinque Terre and Livorno regions. Casolare has 156 seats.
