Seven New Costa Rican Hotels to Open Through November 2014

Seven hotel openings totaling 1,309 rooms are expected to open between December 2013 and November 2014, according to the Costa Rican Tourism Board. The country had 45,531 rooms open at the end of 2012, an increase of 1,816 over 2011.

Opening activity isn't only in the future, however. Carlson Rezidor opened the Park Inn by Radisson San Jose in Costa Rica at the end of February. The newly built hotel has 135 rooms and caters to business travelers. The hotel features Carlson Rezidor’s restaurant concept, RBG, and is the first of its kind in Central America offering an international menu with a local twist.

Hotel performance in the country was not as strong as hoteliers would have liked in the main vacation period of December and January, according to the National Chamber of Tourism.

A survey by the chamber of 152 hosting companies across the country found that 40 percent deemed hotel occupancy during that period as “regular,” while 30 percent considered it “poor,” 12 percent said it was “good,” and only 7.3 percent said it was “very good.”

Establishments with fewer than 100 rooms were occupied at a rate of 62.9 percent, while hotels with more than 200 rooms had occupation rates of 15.6 percent.

The Pacific provinces of Guanacaste and Puntarenas were the regions with the highest percentage of local tourism, while the Northern Region, the Central Valley and the Caribbean were the least visited.
