Canada: Victoria is a Quiet Bargain

By Allan Lynch

The Air Transport Research Society’s Global Airport Benchmarking Report identified Victoria International Airport (YYJ) as the lowest cost per enplaned passenger in Canada.

In a world of myriad flight surcharges, fees and taxes this is good news for individual travellers as well as budget-stretching planners.

"It is extremely important to us to be a low cost airport because we recognize that profit margins in the airline industry are thin, and this allows them to keep their prices down,” said Geoff Dickson, president and CEO of the Victoria Airport Authority.

While Victoria has a lower profile than Vancouver⎯its bigger, Olympic neighbor⎯it offers all the modern meeting amenities of a provincial capital as well as quirky surprises to amuse delegates ranging from the annual Victoria International Chalk Festival, when artists cover asphalt in temporary masterpieces, to a harbour-hopping watery pub crawl.

The city’s main meeting space, the modern Victoria Conference Centre (VCC) contains 73,000 sq. ft. of space in 19 rooms. The attached Crystal Garden has carved 25,000 sq. ft. of event space from a 1920s swimming pool and tea garden.

There are over 6,100 hotel rooms within a 15-minute walk of the VCC.
