Will San Diego Comic-Con Move to Anaheim or L.A.?

Last week, CBS reported that the popular San Diego Comic-Con may soon become the Los Angeles Comic-Con or the Anaheim Comic-Con. According to the news site, "a competition is underway to relocate" the annual summer festival that celebrates comic books, fantasy and science fiction to other cities in the region.

The ever-growing event reportedly attracted an estimated 130,000 people to the San Diego Convention Center in 2014. According to pop-culture website Bleeding Cool, brought in $177.8 million from the 130,000 fans who attended for the conference's four-night run, not including those who didn’t have passes, and those who came early or stayed late for pre- or post-tours.

Steven Johnson, public affairs vice president for the San Diego Convention Center, told the paper that other cities with larger convention centers, including L.A. and Anaheim, are making a bid to host Comic-Con, adding that Anaheim may be a "more direct competitor" than the City of Angels.

But L.A. is fighting hard to get the conference, and reportedly offered to host the event for $1.

Comic-Con Director of Marketing David Glanzer told the pop culture website that the event planners are not planning an immediate move, but are renegotiating the contract as its term comes to an end. "Other cities keep track of this schedule and some submit their own proposals," he said.

But keeping the conference in San Diego does present problems, he acknowledged, adding that the organizing team has been "confronted with a lack of space and expensive hotel room rates for our attendees." Currently, due to space limitations within the Convention Center, Comic-Con has implemented a cap on attendance as well as exhibitors, which limits the amount of revenue the event can bring in.

In the meantime, Johnson says San Diego officials and tourism groups will "fight hard" to keep the event in the city. Comic-Con International 2015 will be held July 9-12 (with Preview Night on July 8) at the San Diego Convention Center.
