Maastricht hotel gets sustainable accreditation

Green Globe today announced certification of the Hotel Beaumont in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The family-owned hotel located in the Wyck district of the city centre, has focused on an overall and global environmental and social sustainability policy for many years.

Green Globe Certification’s chief executive, Guido Bauer, said: “The staff at Hotel Beaumont has worked incredibly hard – and it paid off with 67% compliance against the Green Globe Standard for Sustainable Travel and Tourism. We are proud to award Hotel Beaumont the Green Globe Certificate.”

The hotel is well-known as the oldest family-owned hotel in Maastricht and is located in a landmark building from 1912. For almost a century the Beaumont family has owned and managed the hotel and sustainably maintained the beautiful historic building. The hotel’s design by British architect, David Chipperfield, is modern, but honors the typical building characteristics, which is represented by the original ceilings in combination with a contemporary minimalistic design.

Hotel Managers Jean-Marc and Christophe Beaumont, the fourth Beaumont generation to manage the hotel, stated: “It’s of the greatest importance that sustainability really ‘lives’ in the company. Team effort is key! We are not perfect yet, but we will continue to improve, because we are striving for a better world. It is not just about the Green Globe Certificate – although we are all incredibly proud of this achievement – but it is a firm part of our values and goals.”

Hotel Beaumont is committed to creating a safe and healthy work environment, supporting the local community, and training and developing all employees. Chef de Cuisine, Audrey Eussen, uses as many local and organic products as possible in the hotel’s restaurant, which is a member of Maastricht Culinair, a partnership of Maastricht’s finest restaurants. The hotel also prefers to work with partners who have similar sustainability goals and encourages its suppliers to use environmental-friendly products and packaging. Hotel guests have the choice if and when they would like new towels and linens.

Hotel Manager Rozien Beaujean said: “The hospitality industry is the largest in the world. Every day millions of people sleep in beds that belong to big hotel chains or family companies such as our own. Where we can really make a difference is not only by performing better ourselves but by creating awareness among our guests.”
