Benelux: Brussels’ Future is Green

How will the future of Brussels’ mobility look like? If Secretary of State for Mobility Bruno De Lille has his way, the Belgian capital would have an aerial cableway and cargo trams, boats and drones by 2040. Shared vehicles, cars as well as bikes, will also play an important role. De Lille let a couple of consulting bureaus work out a vision for the future, discarding all political difficulties.

“Brussels has to become a ‘city of proximity’. A multipolar city of short distances, where everything is quickly and easily accessible.” De Lille calls his proposals “visionary, but still realistic”. The ideas focus mostly on the need of inhabitants and visitors for efficient daily work, shop or leisure transport.

Central to the plan is a future city where car- and cargo traffic is led away from the city centre. If possible, most of it will disappear underground. More, better and more efficient public transport, living space and a lot more greenery will claim this newly available extra space. A more open, connected and mobile city will restore and improve the social tissue it so desperately needs.

A visionary realist or a dreamer? Who will say? We sure would welcome these new ideas in a European capital clogged in traffic more and more every day.
