World Cancer Congress Ends Record Year of Healthcare Events in Melbourne

Finishing off a record year, the 2014 World Cancer Congress, organized by the Union for International Cancer Control and hosted by Cancer Council Australia, is the sixth of the world’s largest health conferences to be held at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre within 12 months.

Melbourne and MCEC successfully hosted the below international conferences, which combined have attracted more than 40,000 delegates and generated over $209 million in economic impact for Victoria.

  • World Diabetes Congress (December 2013, 12,500 delegates)
  • World Congress of Cardiology (May 2014, 9000 delegates)
  • International Congress of the World Federation of Hemophilia (May 2014, 3200 delegates)
  • International AIDS Conference (July 2014, 13,300 delegates)
  • International Gynecologic Cancer Society Meeting (November 2014, 2000 delegates)
  • World Cancer Congress (December 2014, more than 2,500 delegates)

The Congress was secured by the Melbourne Convention Bureau in 2010, with Club Melbourne Ambassador Professor David Hill AO playing a key role in the bid win. “An event like the WCC requires a strong research base, strong government commitment to cancer control and the backing of the city to successfully deliver it," Melbourne Convention Bureau Chief Executive Officer Karen Bolinger said in a statement. “We are delighted that Melbourne is playing host to the WCC, as events such as these create a legacy of lasting change and action which will be felt for many years to come.”

At the UICC General Assembly on Tuesday night, Club Melbourne Ambassador Professor Sanchia Aranda, who is also Co-Chair of the Congress Programme Committee and member of the Congress Organising Committee and Host Committee, was announced President-elect of the UICC.

MCEC Chief Executive Peter King said: “We wish to congratulate our Ambassador Professor Sanchia Aranda on this significant UICC appointment; it’s wonderful to see her hard work and commitment recognised in this way.
“It’s been an incredible year for international conferences and few venues have the capabilities to deliver six of the world’s largest health conferences and this success is a credit to the whole MCEC team.

“Looking ahead in 2015, we’ll continue our important ‘Team Melbourne’ partnership and major event strategy with MCB to deliver large international events to Melbourne, which includes the ongoing investment in our world-leading Club Melbourne Ambassador Program.”

The biennial World Cancer Congress is the largest event in the UICC calendar and concludes this Saturday 6 December with ‘Consumers Day’ where the general public can register to attend a full day of sessions including the closing concert Inspiring Lives; Inspiring Music.
