Australia: Douglas Region Back in Favour

In partnership with:

The Douglas region in Tropical North Queensland has reached more than two million visitor room nights, for the first time in five years.

Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree executive officer Tara Bennett said the domestic market was driving the growth was with 264,000 visitors and 1.5 million room nights. This compares to the previous year’s figures of 259,000 visitors and 1.2 million room nights.

“The strong results are testament to the huge investment our operators make in their product and marketing the sensational visitor experience,” she said.

“The growth in both domestic and international visitor numbers is an excellent result and I expect to see this trend continue as the Australian dollar falls making the destination more affordable for the international market and more attractive to domestic travellers.”

International visitors totalled 93,168 compared to 81,093 the previous year while total room nights reached 572,130.

“There is certainly a lot of optimism in the market and with the $40 million dollar upgrade of the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas underway, as well as the considerable investment at the Reef Marina, and Daintree Eco Lodge, we can expect more exciting days ahead.”
