Australia: Canberra’s intellectual capital

Canberra Convention Bureau secured more than 50 national conferences in 2014-15, set to bring an estimated $40 million in economic activity to the ACT region.

Canberra Convention Bureau chairman Patrick McKenna said the bureau's research and learning institutes group was key in attracting research and professional association events to Canberra.

McKenna said Canberra was ideally placed to help organisations make “a real impact in their areas of influence”.

One such conference is next year’s International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology to be held over five days in February. The ANU's Research School of Physics and Engineering was bid leader for winning the conference, which is expected to attract around 1200 Australian and international delegates.

"Having the ANU, a major player in nanotechnology helped us to convince a committee, hosting in Canberra was worthwhile," said Professor Chennupati Jagadish.
