VIDEO: How Education and Globalization Work Together for PCMA

In January, PCMA’s Convening Leaders conference changed direction with a new focus on education and exploration. While at EIBTM in November, IMR’s James Latham sat down with PCMA’s Chief Operating Officer Sherrif Karamat to look back over what proved effective and what attendees at next year’s conference in Chicago can expect.

This year’s Convening Leaders boosted its education program with The Business School and various tracks, Karamat said. “We anchored it with some tremendous general sessions, finishing with Sal Khan talking about transforming the world, really, [through] education.” As a group, he continued, PCMA believes that meetings and education help transform cities, economies and societies. “Meetings drive the economy, not just in local destinations, but around the world,” he said. “PCMA is trying to equip its members and customers with the best possible tools—resources and education—to help them be better,” Karamat said.

Chicago, he continued, will be the “perfect environment” for what PCMA plans to do in January. “We are building upon the architecture of Chicago. We are integrating various formats--a hands-on clinic, powerful speakers--but critically important are the relationships and the peer-to-peer networking we have when great leaders come together.”

Convening Leaders is “the event that dares to fail” with new and innovative strategies on display for attendees to experience. “PCMA itself is an experiment,” Karamat said. “When you go to Convening Leaders this year, you will be seeing numerous experiments that we expect to fair--that we want to fail! We want to learn from those failures, and we believe that’s how we learn.

PCMA CEO Deborah Sexton had previously expressed excitement about the Association’s partnership with SACEOS, and new educational opportunities for and about Asian events. “As much as we say that PCMA is a global organization, we’re getting there. We’re not there [yet], Karamat said. “We’re in 39 countries today, [and] we are hoping to be much more global and provide more tools that will help people plan meetings globally.” But PCMA’s main goal, he added, is education regardless of location. “We want to make sure you have the type of knowledge that will make you successful in your environment.”
On that same level, he added, PCMA is also learning from the ever-increasing range of environments in which it has a presence. “It’s very much a symbiotic relationship.”
