The New Normal for Associations

What is the difference between an international association and a global association? How does this subtle distinction affect the way associations operate? And what room does this new world leave for traditional face-to-face interaction and the coveted annual congress?

Panos Tzivanidis, head of events and hospitality at the International Olympic Committee, was a keynote speaker at the International and European Associations Congress, held recently in Lausanne. Tzivanidis has years of experience working with member organisations and has seen the landscape change from one based on a principle of ‘understand and adapt’ to one of ‘accept and act.’

The change, he says, is being driven by the younger generation, which has grown up with digital technology and social media that have broken down international and cultural borders that baby-boomers have had to negotiate on their own terms.

On location, he outlined his thought on these questions and more to AMI editor James Lancaster.
