GMITE Advisory Board Convenes in New York

Top meetings and incentives planners met in New York City on Monday, January 13, to partake in the Global Meeting & Incentive Travel Exchanges (GMITE) Advisory Board meeting. Thirteen buyers and 19 suppliers congregated at the Gansevoort Park Avenue to discuss past GMITE events and gain feedback on how to better serve attendees in the future.

"The annual GMITE advisory board is comprised of both suppliers and buyers of incentive travel, all who have a vested interest in growing their respective businesses and furthering growth within the industry," says Danielle Cirami-Gillis, Global Director, Events & Media, Quextex Media. "All members are past participants of the portfolio of events that make up the GMITE brand."

Buyers consist of planners and purchasers of incentives and meetings, while suppliers were high end properties, hotels, destinations and cruise lines. Both groups broke out into smaller focus groups to brainstorm and lend feedback on past and future events.

Attendees expressed the benefit of having one-on-one appointments between buyers and suppliers. "I attend GMITE because I am searching for what's new out there," says Jason McCallum of United Incentives, Inc. "The one-on-one atmosphere is helpful and really assists in building relationships."

"It's all about privacy," adds Dianne Heffernan, ProEvents. "With one-on-one appointments, you can have that private conversation."

"There is a good balance between planned interaction between buyers and suppliers and free time," says Larry Head, Global Event Solutions. "This lends itself to organically building relationships."

Participants also discussed trends, revealing their insight into what destinations are hot for MICE travel…and perhaps future GMITE locations. Some destinations hot on the MICE market are South Africa, Brazil, Cuba, Taiwan, Macau and the United Arab Emirates.

"As we look towards expansion and growth within our MICE event sector, we rely heavily on the expertise and guidance of our buyers and suppliers," Cirami-Gillis adds. "Both parties provide invaluable suggestions on specific event-related education, format and future destinations."

Stay tuned for details on the 2014 GMITE event.
