Associations Study Widespread Benefits of Meetings and Events

At this year's IMEX Frankfurt, ICCA CEO Martin Sirk noted that up until recently, the meetings and events industry has focused on measuring the impact of face-to-face gatherings and tourism. "What we haven't done much of is talk to the associations themselves as to weather they would find it valuable." What ICCA learned at its recent Paris conference was that there are some "amazingly strong examples" of associations and meeting organizers who look beyond tourism when calculating value, including how much business is created, improvements to healthcare, publications and new business connections.

"But they're measuring it for the needs of the association itself," he said, "not for the needs of the destination or the meeting planner."

Rod Cameron, who handles program management at the Joint Meetings Industry Council, noted that many areas—including medical, technical and business development—found that what they do affects not only their own members, but the society at large through practice improvement, knowledge transfer and academic advancement.
