U.S. and Mexico: The Latest From Florida

jw marriott marco island

From new event hotels to major renovations, Florida leads this week’s U.S. and Mexico news in the meetings and events industry.

The first new hotel is the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort, which just opened following a $320 million renovation of the former Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, Golf Club & Spa

This fall, the resort will open a new 94-room, adults-only tower, bringing the resort to a total of 810 guest rooms and suites and a total of 100,000 square feet of flexible event space. The tower will also have a 12,000 square foot indoor entertainment center, a rooftop pool and a restaurant.

Currently the resort’s culinary concept is led by Executive Chef Eric Vasta, who most recently held the post at the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai. Culinary programming will include private sommelier-led wine tastings and Chef’s Table experiences at signature restaurant Ario, helmed by Chef de Cuisine Gerald Sombright. Beachside guests can enjoy fish-grilling classes, rum tastings and private dinners along the shoreline.

The resort also has a Spa by JW, offering a variety of menu options from full-service treatments to express spa services that start at a 12-minute entry point and are bookable without an appointment. Additional spa programming includes daily beach yoga and weekly spa events.

January 24 will mark the opening of the new Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach, which will offer 343 guest rooms and over 22,000 square feet of flexible meeting space.

Venues will include the area’s largest ballroom, the 10,632 square foot Dunes Ballroom that can host up to 800 people. Also available are seven different meeting rooms, divisible into 12 breakout rooms. Other venues can offer space for events ranging from 10 - 300 attendees.

Each of the property’s guest rooms has a balcony or terrace, flatscreen TV and high-speed Internet access. The top-level Presidential Suite is a bi-level, three bedroom accommodation with a diving area, private balcony and separate living room including a sleeper sofa. The Presidential Suite is available with one king bed only.

The B Ocean Resort in Fort Lauderdale has taken the wraps off a top-to-bottom renovation project that has enhanced and expanded the resort’s event space.

The resort’s 14,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space now extends to the second floor, where the Point Room offers floor-to-ceiling windows with an attached outdoor beachfront terrace. B Ocean's private beach, pool decks and first level ballroom can also be used for large group events, meetings or weddings. The project also updated the resort’s 484 guest rooms in a “coastal chic” design.

The move follows two major start of year hotel openings in Florida: the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort, which is open now, and the Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach, which opens January 24. And, of course, keep keeping an eye on the ongoing expansion to the Miami Beach Convention Center

Farther north, Marriott International just opened the first hotel for its Millennial-focused Aloft brand in Long Island City, Queens. The new Aloft Long Island City - Manhattan View has 1,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, a rooftop terrace offering views of the New York City skyline, and 176 loft-style guest rooms. Though it is in Queens, the hotel is a short subway ride from many major Manhattan attractions, including Times Square, the Empire State Building, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
