Toronto event engages key minds on nuclear medicine

More than 6,000 physicians, technologists and scientists descended on Toronto this month to share research, learn about the latest breakthroughs and trends, and discuss important issues in the field of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging.

They were attending SNM’s 56th Annual Meeting, which took place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) from 13-17 June. The event was welcomed personally by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Toronto Mayor David Miller.

SNM is an international scientific and medical organisation dedicated to raising public awareness about molecular imaging and how it can help provide patients with the best healthcare possible. SNM’s 17,000 members specialise in molecular imaging, a vital element of today's medical practice that adds a dimension to diagnosis, changing the way common and devastating diseases are understood and treated.

Through events like the SNM Annual Meeting, the organisation’s members set the standard for the discipline by creating guidelines and sharing information.

"Molecular imaging is changing the way that common diseases are diagnosed
and treated," explained SNM president Robert Atcher, PhD, MBA. "Molecular imaging and nuclear medicine scans allow physicians to see exactly what is happening and how a disease is responding to therapy.

“More than 20 million people have molecular imaging procedures each year. These are commonly used to diagnose and monitor treatment in patients with cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease and stroke, to name just a few."

In separate messages to SNM, Canada’s prime minister and Toronto’s mayor explained the significance of hosting the event, pointing to the importance of molecular imaging to the future practice of medicine and the fit of Toronto as a host city. Mayor Miller cited Toronto's high concentration of research institutes, business support services and world-renowned medical researchers as key factors in making the city an excellent choice.

"We are pleased to host an event of such positive impact. Not only does the SNM Annual Meeting spark discussion and sharing to improve patient care, it has an immediate positive impact on the local economy of $10 million in visitor spending," said Barry Smith, president and chief executive of the MTCC. "As for participants, Toronto is centrally located within a 90-minute flight time from nearly 60% of the US population – an excellent location for an event of this size and scope."
