Many conference organizers provide justification toolkits to help registrants gain the boss’s approval to attend. These often include back-of-the-envelope calculations on expenses, as well as anticipated professional development and business benefits.

Networking benefits are often mentioned, but how do you assign a dollar value to that? New or reignited connections can lead to opportunities ranging from incremental to mega-deal. Making big progress on solving a major organizational problem can also be an intangible benefit of the conference networking experience.

I’m blessed to have an incredible network! I don’t have all the answers, but I usually know someone who does. My attendance justification at industry conferences is based more on “who else will be there” versus the education content, parties, or speakers.
