Americas: Why You Need to Start Thinking Outside the Contracted Hotel Room Block

Most meeting planners know in their heart of hearts that their official room-block histories only tell part of the story when it comes to pitching the value of their events to potential venues. There are always going to be attendees who book outside of the contracted block, whether it’s because they are mandated to stay at certain chains by corporate travel contracts, they find a cheaper room down the street on Expedia, or they like the adventure of staying at a “sharing economy” venue provided by Airbnb and the like. Now there’s a study that puts a number to the phenomenon—an average of 34 percent of all group room nights in the U.S. are booked outside the contracted block.

Of course, that average won’t apply to every event: The study also found that there was a lot of variation in the room-block pickup percentage due to factors including the event size, facility gross square footage, market segment, and length of an event, according to Tourism Economics Director of Impact Studies Christopher Pike
