Americas: Unite Here Tags ACCME to Get Drug Money Out of Continuing Medical Education

Those who believe pharmaceutical and medical device companies can provide commercial support for accredited CME without influencing the content and those do not generally don’t agree on much. But they do find themselves agreeing on one thing: A recent initiative launched by labor union Unite Here is a little weird.

Unite Here, which represents hotel, gaming, food service, laundry, transportation, airport, and manufacturing and distribution workers in North America, began gathering signatures in June for a petition asking the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to “kick the drug money out of CME for good” by cutting the financial ties between physicians who participate in CME and “Big Pharma.” The initiative, called NoMoreDrugMoney, stems from Unite Here’s belief that ACCME’s Standards for Commercial Support are not sufficient to safeguard against drug-company–induced bias, and wants ACCME to add four new elements to further restrict physician-industry financial relationships.
