Americas: Time to Take a Survey of Your Survey

When it comes to designing an event survey, you need to know the desired outcome prior to taking action. This means asking stakeholders what information needs to be gleaned from the survey and how the results will be used. You also need to create a survey plan for before, during, and after your event.  

Pick the Right Format

Once your timing and objectives are solidified, it’s time to create the format. Start by analyzing your attendees. They likely are busy professionals with equally busy personal lives. With the cluttered world of communications only getting more hectic, the time you request from them must be meaningful to you both.  

  • Make questions and answer options concise and easy to understand.
  • Ask no more than 10 questions and limit the possible answers for each question to no more than four options.
  • Minimize “open text” questions. Asking attendees to “freelance” more than one or two answers can get cumbersome for them and will likely not yield thorough answers.
