Americas: Speaking Out Against Human Trafficking

The travel and tourism industry has a huge impact on the world economy. The latest research from the World Travel & Tourism Council shows that the industry’s contribution to world GDP grew for the fifth consecutive year in 2014, rising to a total of 9.8 percent of world GDP and the industry employs nearly 277 million people—that’s one out of every 11 jobs on the planet.  Governments around the world are beginning to understand the MICE sector’s contribution to the economic, social, and cultural development of host communities.

Most large companies have a detailed corporate social responsibility (CSR) code of conduct and apply these principles when they organize meetings, events, and incentive travel. However, there are still many societal impacts of the travel and tourism industry that need to be addressed. Sexual exploitation of children is a growing problem affecting every corner of the world.
