Americas: Shifting the Meetings Message Beyond Economic Impact

Play RoomOutside the buzz and swirl of the IMEX America 2015 show floor at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas this week, IMEX Group CEO Carina Bauer sat down to talk about the show and the meetings industry as a whole.

It was at last year’s IMEX America that Bill McDermott, CEO of global software company SAP, became a meetings industry superstar by speaking out clearly and often about the power of meetings to drive businesses forward. His message dovetailed with the efforts of the Meetings Mean Business coalition to spread the word about the importance and impact of meetings.

Evolution of the Meetings Message
Bauer perceives a new emphasis in meetings messaging this year—something she says came up strongly at the Politicans Forum at this year’s IMEX Frankfurt show in May. The shift, she says, “is that the message is not just about the economic impact of meetings anymore. It’s really about the wider impact the industry has in driving the knowledge-based economy.” The economic impact is an important byproduct of meetings, of course, but they are not planned for that reason. Rather, their purposes include training, knowledge transfer, research, motivation
