Jean-Michel Petit was a venture capitalist vacationing with his son in Peru when they left their high-end hotel one day and spent the night with a local family, sharing lunch, dinner, and breakfast with them. At the end of the trip, Petit thought, “In 10 years, I will remember Machu Picchu and those people.” The thought sparked a desire to recreate the experience.

He wondered if others would share his enthusiasm for meals with strangers, so he did research in several countries asking two questions: “Would you like to share a meal at someone’s home while traveling?” and “Would you like to host travelers at your home for a meal?”
