Americas: Planning the Western Veterinary Conference’s Future

When asked what it’s like to hold a five-day conference for close to 15,000 veterinary professionals under one roof—even as admittedly big a roof as that which tops the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las VegasWestern Veterinary Conference CEO David Little just laughs. “You don’t get outside much. It kind of feels like you’re in a biodome after a while.” But unlike its chief executive during meeting time, WVC is stepping out of its box in all kinds of ways as the venerable show—one of the nation’s largest veterinary conferences—enters its 87th year.

MeetingsNet caught up with Little—whose experience in event planning also includes service with the American Veterinary Medical Association Convention and Meeting Planning Division and the board of directors for the Professional Convention Management Association—to learn more about the conference’s growth strategy, what the organizers are doing to stay ahead of the audience’s changing learning needs, and the new programs it’s launching to reach those who can’t make it to the annual conference, coming back in February 2015 to Mandalay Bay.
