Americas: Paris Makes Best and Worst International Meeting Location in A Recent Study

The business events industry has made a strong comeback since the onset of the recession in 2008, nowhere more so than on the global meetings scene, and the forecast is for continued growth. A new study of North American meeting planners identifies their site selection process, both for destinations outside the U.S. and within, measuring influences on decision-making through multiple marketing channels.

The study, which is the second edition of one done three years ago, found several destinations to be on both planners’ “best” and “worst” lists, clearly for different reasons, said Daniella Middleton, business events manager, Development Counsellors International, a New York–based firm that specializes in all phases of economic development and tourism marketing.

A View from Meeting Planners: Winning Strategies in Destination Marketing,” aimed at giving destinations insights into stakeholders’ buying decisions, also establishes benchmarks for meeting pros. While DCI asked planners for their favorite destinations in the 2012 study, the least favorable question was added this year, Middleton explained, so that destinations could tackle some of the brand perceptions they face.
