A few voices can make a difference! That’s my takeaway from two eye-opening and informative days in Washington, D.C., at the end of April for the Global Business Travel Association Legislative Symposium 2015. What an opportunity to share my passion for this industry and learn more about how Washington works.

On the first day of the event, nearly 100 GBTA members and business travel professionals received training on how to approach our meetings on Capitol Hill: Take time to introduce yourself and your organization, bring statistics that show the significance of your issue (nearly $348 billion was spent on business travel in the U.S. last year!), provide a leave-behind packet, and bring lots of business cards. We also heard from a number of influential senators and representatives who have an interest in the business of meetings and travel, including Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN); Rep. Mario Diaz Balart (R-FL); Isabel Hill, director of commerce, Office of Tourism and Industries, Department of Commerce; Rep. Lois Frankel (D-FL); Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA); Rep. John Katko (R-NY); and Rep. Sam Graves (R-MO).
