by Dave Lutz, managing director, Velvet Chainsaw Consulting

Survey results, registration, and financial reports are all good lagging indicators for conference improvement. In today’s fast-paced world, we need to focus more on leading indicators that impact those results. Savvy conference organizers do this with pace reporting that benchmarks registration, housing, and exhibit/sponsorship numbers or revenue based on the number of weeks prior to the conference.

If you’re already there on pace reporting, cool! You’re ready to crank things up a notch and embrace the earliest of all leading conference indicators—participant behavior. This means tracking and observing attendee actions as they navigate your conference. There are three primary ways to gather this insight:

•  Video surveillance

•  Location tracking—RFID, NFC, or iBeacon

•  Old-fashioned tracking—that, is a smart person with a clipboard and/or camera

We prefer the old-fashioned way. Data shows that most humans despise being tracked.
