Americas: How to Partner With Your Social Media Manager

In 2012, I became my organization’s social media manager, combining my experience in meeting management with my studies in interactive media. To many, this seemed like a departure from a career path on which I’d traveled for more than a decade. In reality, the two roles are very similar. As a meeting planner, you bring people together to collaborate, network, learn, and engage with your company; social media managers do that too, only using social networking technology. Meetings are strategic, as are social media activities.

My role is three-fold: I monitor social media to understand what our communities are talking about (“listening,” in social media parlance). I manage my organization’s social media profiles, sharing information and engaging in conversations. Finally, I support my colleagues across the company as they use social media to meet their objectives.
