There's no shortage of certifications, designations, and certificate programs for those who work in the meeting and event planning industry. Here's a sampling of what's available for meeting planners who want to bring their skills to the next level. (While it's not intended to be all-encompassing, if there's a credential you believe should be on this list and is not, please e-mail Sue Pelletier.)

CMP: The Standard

The Convention Industry Council’s Certified Meeting Professional designation launched in 1985. More than 13,000 people in 35 countries and territories (both planners and suppliers) have earned the credential. Candidates must have three years of experience and a full-time job in the industry; accrue a minimum number of points based on their responsibilities, education, and professional contributions; and pass an exam. CMPs must recertify every five years unless they meet the requirements of the Emeritus status.

Exam fee: $450
