Americas: In Global Business Travel, What’s a Dollar of Prevention Worth?

A recent study has calculated an answer to that question. Funded by the International SOS Foundation and conducted by research and consulting firm Prevent, the report, “Return on Prevention: Benefit/Cost Analysis of Prevention Measures for Business Travelers and International Assignees” finds that $1 spent on pre-travel health checks can return up to $2.53 in costs that would be incurred should an employee require evacuation, repatriation, or be unable to complete an assignment.

“Preparing the traveler is the key element of travel risk prevention,” the report states. ”A foundation for healthy journeys can be given to traveling employees by assessing their health, selecting vaccines, and providing education about prevention. [In particular,] preparing the traveler for a journey to a less-developed world is not easy and takes time; education is as vital to healthy travel as are immunizations.”

The report reviews travel risks and other studies of prevention programs, then delves into the case study of a multinational company and two of its specific programs—a thorough medical “fitness to work” assessment and a malaria prevention program for traveling employees.
