Americas: Food Allergies and Preferences—How Far Do You Have to Go?

Once upon a time, meeting attendees had pretty minimal meal choices—generally chicken or beef, and if they didn’t like it, they ate around it or got their meals outside of the ballroom. But the plates were cleared long ago on those simple meal choices, as became apparent during a recent discussion on the Meetings Community, or MeCo, listserv.

The list of special dietary needs one person provided was dizzying: allergies to nuts, apples, avocados, melon, cherries, chocolate, shellfish, fish, gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, sesame seeds, peaches, pears, nectarines, nitrates, pork, coconut, passion fruit, whey protein, beef, strawberries, cinnamon—and that’s just the start. Planners also are asked to accommodate partial vegetarians (no red meat, for example), vegetarians, and vegans. And don’t forget those whose religions require Kosher or Halal diets.

Where do your attendees’ responsibilities to take care of themselves end and your need to accommodate their appetites begin? That made for quite a lively listserv discussion...
