According to a survey of 7,800 Millennials conducted by Deloitte, young executives are looking for a sense of purpose beyond their paychecks. They need a close connection to the “why” of what they do at work.

This applies to corporate events, too. I see guys who pull up to corporate events with a Rav 4 and $2,000 worth of gear. When the meeting’s over, they want to get out on the lake or the trail where they can feel connected. Golf may have its place, but things are changing.

This represents a challenge and an opportunity for the traditional corporate retreat. The old model of gathering everyone in a room for meetings and then adjourning for drinks doesn’t work with a modern audience. But a more adventurous type of retreat can inspire and motivate leaders.

A whitewater-rafting trip, a hike in the mountains, or a “boot camp” all foster camaraderie and get teams into new environments.
