Americas: Experts as Speakers—a Cautionary Tale

Experts have long been sought after as great speakers to share their unique, hands-on experiences in ways that directly relate to and benefit different audiences. Today, the caliber and diversity of experts available as professional speakers has grown to include healthcare professionals, law enforcement experts, classical musicians, coaches—even rock ’n’ roll drummers.

The risk is that someone who is an expert may not have the skills to wow an audience for 45 minutes. Experts should be able to bring an authentic message to nearly any type of audience—typically told through personal stories that are memorable and entertaining. More important, they should be able to take the successes they’ve earned in their fields and turn them into meaningful “lessons” meant for audiences from any other industry. This is no small task.
