Destination Marketing Association International announced a major staff shakeup today. The Washington, D.C.–based trade association for destination marketing organizations eliminated nine positions as part of a “strategic realignment of the organization,” according to a press release. The departing executives include Charles Jeffers, COO, who has served as organization’s interim CEO, and four vice presidents.

The cuts come as Don Welsh, former CEO of Choose Chicago, takes the reins as president and CEO of the organization. “Following significant analysis, discussion, and deliberation, the timing of this organizational realignment is appropriate and essential,” said DMAI Chairman Bob Lander in a statement. “The executive committee fully supports the strategies and initiatives that Don plans to implement in the very near future.” Those initiatives have not yet been spelled out, but are aimed at a “renewed focus on member and partner needs.”
