It may have been snowing outside, but the energy was at a fever pitch as more than 100 developers, students, doctors, scientists, engineers, programmers, entrepreneurs, and patient advocates from across the U.S. and as far away as Brazil descended on Boston’s Tufts University School of Medicine the last weekend in January for the first hackathon dedicated to reinventing undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education.

Tufts University School of Medicine partnered with hackathon hosts Major League Hacking and Tufts' healthcare innovation program MedStart to bring new tools, and new types of teammates, to work together over one long weekend on ideas that can help healthcare professionals along the full continuum of medical education—from rookie to resident to long-time practitioner—optimize their learning. Participants were provided with all sorts of tools not usually seen in the med ed world, from Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets, to muscle-tracking Myo armbands, to IBM’s Watson, and other state-of-the-art technology by Dell, Leap Motion, athenahealth, ReelDx.com, and Osmosis.
