Americas: Cyber Security—A Real Risk for Meetings

Meeting professionals at “Meeting Menaces—Blockbusters, Conference Crashers, Hackers, and More,” a hybrid session offered at the Professional Convention Management Association’s Convening Leaders conference that took place in Chicago, January 11–14, initially put cyber risks dead last on the list of menaces facing the meetings industry in 2015 when polled. But they changed their tune after hearing from Michael Robinson, program coordinator and adjunct professor for Stevenson University’s Master of Science in Cyber Forensics, and an adjunct professor at George Mason University.

While there have been plenty of recent news reports about data breaches at large corporations—for example, the hack that put Sony execs in the hot seat for e-mailing some not-so-nice comments about Hollywood A-listers—but would cyber criminals really go after your meeting? Robinson said yes. “If I’m looking to steal names, credit card numbers, etc., from thousands of people, where better than a conference?”
