Americas: Bravo to Nobel Peace Prize Winners—May the Meetings Industry Be As Brave
by Susan Sarfati, CEO, High Performance Strategies, LLC
In an industry with such a large percentage of women—and caring men, too—I can hear the loud cheers for the two 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winners.
First, from Pakistan, is Malala Yousafzal, who was shot in 2012 at age 15 by the Taliban because of her stand on the right of girls to education. She recovered and continues her mission with fervor and passion. And from India is Kailash Satyarthi, who fought against child slavery in India and liberated 75,000 children.
Each demonstrates extraordinary leadership, bravery, courage, and commitment to a simple goal—that human beings have equal opportunities and rights. Plain and simple.
Yet in 2014 in the meetings industry, women still do not receive equal compensation as compared to men doing the same job. Unbelievable, but true. There are many statistics that point this out, each differing slightly, but basically verifying that women earn 65 percent to 75 percent less than their male counterparts.
