Americas: Boom! Demolition of the Riviera Makes Way for a Bigger Vegas Convention Center

The 24-story Monaco Tower at the Riviera Hotel and Casino was demolished in the early morning hours Tuesday in over-the-top Las Vegas style. The controlled implosion—preceded by a huge fireworks display and a final countdown with exploding numbers splashed across the night sky—is a major step forward for the Las Vegas Convention & Visitor Authority’s plan to expand the Las Vegas Convention Center District.

riviera hotel and casino las vegasThe 2,075-room, 26-acre Las Vegas classic—backdrop for movies such as the James Bond film “Diamonds Are Forever,” the original 1960 version of “Ocean’s Eleven,” and, more recently, “The Hangover”—was purchased by LVCVA last year for $182.5 million, part of phase one of the three-phase, $2.3 billion convention center expansion.
